ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
For generations, Northside has stitched community and opportunity together. It is a living history — a patchwork of a place built for and by black people of Memphis. Today, it continues that spirit as a community hub providing opportunities for every individual to prosper. Northside Square is where the threads of what was and what is becomes the fabric of what’s next.
Northside Square will serve as a community hub complete with services and amenities, including comprehensive health care, workforce development, literacy advocacy, technical skills training, athletic, fitness, and performing and visual arts opportunities. The proposed spaces include shared community amenities such as an upgraded gymnasium and performing arts space as well as a welcoming plaza, renovated courtyard, office space, retail space, and affordable housing units. Become a part of this legacy by purchasing one of the Northside Legacy bricks.

NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY
adapted from The Cougar 1981 Yearbook
Northside High School opened its doors to students for the first time in September 1967 for grades 10-12 with a desegregated student body as well as a desegregated faculty. Most of the faculty was made up of experienced teachers from Humes and Manassas High Schools. The first graduating class consisted of an original 215 graduates.
Seeing the need for a large high school in North Memphis, it was decided to build a comprehensive high school on the 14.26-acre plot where Klondike Elementary is also situated. Humes High School, one of the oldest high schools in the city, was closed as a senior high school and the vocational departments of Manassas High School were also moved to the Northside High School to comprise our Vocational Departments.
The charter for the T. C. Brindley Chapter of the National Honor Society was brought from the Humes High School to Northside and until 1973 operated under the charter. This charter has now been retired, and the Society is now operating under the new C. E. Woodard Charter.

Northside High School also houses all the high school records from Humes High School. Northside is centered around a courtyard where there are outdoor classrooms available. The school has year-round air conditioning and has the most modern equipment that could be purchased. The building has three floors and a sub-level where Auto Mechanics, Auto Body, Graphic Arts, and Woodworking Shops are located as well as the ROTC Armory and Band Complex.
The other vocational departments are located throughout the building (Vocational Head: Mrs. Mozella Williams) where they can function more thoroughly with the academic subjects. All the Occupational Home Economics and Commercial Foods are located on the first floor.
The Business Education Department, Distributive Education, and Cosmetology Laboratories are located on the second floor. Radio and TV Repair, Electricity, Drafting, Science, and Foreign Language Laboratories are located on the third floor.
The well-equipped library is off the front lobby on the second floor, which makes it easily accessible to all departments.
The architect considered isolate high noise level areas in order to keep one program from disturbing the other.
Wanting to blend the old with the new, the colors, orange and white of Humes High School were retained for the school’s colors and the “Cougar” was the chosen mascot. The newspaper was named The Cougar Times, and the yearbook The Cougar.
